There are many things we learn from past relationships and decisions we have made, or in my case choices which I didn’t make, but I think the most important thing is that we learn from the past and try and ensure history doesn’t repeat itself.
When I spoke at the Smart Egg event last week, one of the pieces of advice I gave to the ladies that listened to what I had to say about my egg freezing experience is don’t put off decisions surrounding your fertility, in other words, don’t stick your head in the sand!
I originally looked into egg freezing in 2014 and for one reason or another, I didn’t pursue it. As I have said before I don’t like to have regrets, as I’m a believer that everything happens for a reason, even though it might not be clear at the time. Repetitively looking back and wondering ‘what if’ does me no good at all.
If I could give my 37-year old self some advice I would have said, spend the money and go and get your fertility checked out properly. The money will be well spent and even if you don’t want to pursue egg freezing at least you know what’s going on in your body, rather than hoping, or assuming that everything will be ok. Who knows what the results of my fertility MOT might have been, but at least I would have well informed and perhaps had the courage to make some decisions.
I was humbled that some of the women that listened to me at last week’s event came and thanked me afterwards for being so open and honest about my experiences. If it helps even one person to take action about their own fertility then I’d be so pleased.
I don’t know the individual stories of the women that attended the event, but they all have one thing in common, they have taken the very first step in thinking about their fertility. The hardest part is keeping the momentum going by continuing their research and putting fertility at the very top of their to-do list, rather than at the bottom or forgotten completely.
It seems incredible to think where I was 12 months ago, I couldn’t have imagined that I would be here telling my story, or speaking at an event, so it just goes to show what you can achieve by taking control of your own life.
I’d love to hear from anyone that has any questions or would like to share their own experiences. If however, you’re just starting your research you may find the links to the various sites on my home page helpful.
